33 Thoughts

Today is my 33rd birthday. Allow me a moment of self-indulgence as a I share 33 thoughts running through my mind today.

  1. My kids get more excited about my birthday than I do, but it’s still fun.
  2. I’m surrounded by people who love and support me. More than I deserve.
  3. My wife is truly my closest friend.
  4. I love being a dad. But I really love being Abby’s dad and Caitlin’s dad. They are sweet girls.
  5. It’s amazing that Jesus was 33 when he died. I always imagine him as 45 or something.
  6. I’m so far from being like Jesus it’s amazing.
  7. I never stop needing grace. Every. Single. Day.
  8. Teaching the Bible is a tremendous privilege.
  9. The fact that people don’t remember much of what I say is both encouraging and discouraging.
  10. We have an unbelievable staff team that works hard, has fun, and deeply loves people.
  11. I must not take for granted how great it is to work two of my best friends, Matthew Braselton and Tyler Johnson.
  12. God has put a core of people in our church who really, really love Jesus and show it with their sacrifice and generosity.
  13. This Redemption Church merger thing has been a very good thing.
  14. It’s great having my parents live in Arizona half the year.
  15. It’s very difficult being away from most of Molly’s family, especially when new people join the family.
  16. Molly and I don’t live in Arizona for the weather, but because Jesus has called us here.
  17. I’m thankful for the lessons I learned as an athlete.
  18. I will not suddenly wake up someday as the person I hope to be, but will become that person through daily obedience and discipline.
  19. Andy Stanley has helped my leadership so much. He’s right when he says, “Direction — not intentions, hopes, dreams, prayers, beliefs, intellect, or education — determines destination.”
  20. I get bored easily if I’m not working on shaping something new.
  21. Life goes by faster every year. I think it’s because there isn’t a summer break when you become an adult.
  22. My favorite book I’ve read this year so far has been The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni.
  23. There is not enough time to do all that you think you should — choices must be made about who and what to cheat.
  24. I enjoy officiating funerals more than weddings because it always makes me reflect on what’s important (Ecclesiastes 7:2).
  25. I love the definition of biblical manhood given in 33 The Series: “Reject passivity, accept responsibility, lead courageously, invest eternally.”
  26. I sometimes miss the startup phase of church planting. It was much easier to exceed expectations.
  27. People who complain about a church being too concerned about non-Christians don’t ever invite unbelieving friends to church.
  28. I hope Mitt Romney wins the 2012 Election. But I hope more that Christians demonstrate that their hope is in Jesus regardless of the outcome.
  29. Logos Bible Software is such a great tool for preaching, but it makes me fear judgment day when I consider how many incredible resources I have but don’t use or apply.
  30. Today is also Mark Driscoll’s birthday. He’s a polarizing figure, but I’m thankful for his ministry and the Acts29 Network he started. I also wonder who will get more happy birthday wishes on Facebook?
  31. I started working out at Crossfit Incite today. I’m a little sore, but excited about where this is headed.
  32. It’s easy to be impatient when you’re young. I wonder if I’ll outgrow this.
  33. I look back on the last 10 years of living in Arizona and think of the quote, “Most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a day and underestimate what they can accomplish in a decade.” I wonder what the next 10 will hold?

I was married in December, 2001 to Molly, who I met at the U of I. In June of 2002, we moved to Phoenix and have been here ever since. In July of 2006, we welcomed a baby girl, Abby, into our family.

  1. Happy Happy Birthday Luke!
Still young, but yet very wise!

Thankful for the impact that you have had on my life!

I appreciate the grace you share! It teaches me to be more graceful to others. What has especially stood out to me about your message on Gospel and Politics. Don’t automatically put up a wall when the other person doesn’t believe what you believe. Listen and try to understand. That has recently applied to my marriage! Thank you!
