38 Reasons I’m Thankful for My Parents

38 years ago today my parents, Don and Carolyn Simmons, were married. To honor them and celebrate their anniversary, I thought I’d offer 38 reasons why I’m thankful for them.

  1. They stayed married for 38 years. This is no small feat.
  2. They give me unconditional love.
  3. They welcomed my wife, Molly, into our family and love her as their own daughter.
  4. They love my daughters and engage with them at their level.
  5. They disciplined me.
  6. They admitted when they were wrong.
  7. They drove me through a childhood of sports and activities.
  8. They rarely, if ever, missed a game.
  9. They flew out almost every weekend when I was in college to see me play.
  10. They took me to church and encouraged me to love Jesus.
  11. They worked hard to earn money and provide for our family.
  12. They generously funded my college and seminary education.
  13. They love taking our family on vacation.
  14. They supported me when I stopped playing baseball, even though it wasn’t their preference.
  15. They moved to Arizona for most of the year to be near our family.
  16. They love participating in Redemption Church Gateway and have many friends there.
  17. They encouraged me to have a wide appreciation of life, from plays to pickleball.
  18. They taught me right from wrong.
  19. They taught me how to have a firm handshake and look an adult in the eye.
  20. They parented me when I was a kid instead of trying to be my friend.
  21. They now are my friends, instead of trying to parent me.
  22. They like to laugh.
  23. They tolerate one another’s idiosyncrasies.
  24. They know that some of the best learning happens through experiences.
  25. They taught me to love the Denver Broncos.
  26. They read to my daughters a lot.
  27. They don’t take themselves too seriously.
  28. They are curious and like to learn new things.
  29. They give generously of their time, energy and money.
  30. They are young at heart and are not old curmudgeons.
  31. They always take a genuine interest in my friends.
  32. They are continually growing in their relationship with the Lord.
  33. They call me and stay in touch, even though I’m lousy at doing it in return.
  34. They created a home where we ate dinner together almost every night.
  35. They love dessert (and often make good ones).
  36. They have our daughters over for a sleepover almost every Friday night so we can go on a date.
  37. They know the power of simple traditions, like making waffles after the sleepovers.
  38. They often say, “I love you.”

Congratulations, Mom and Dad. I love you.

I was born and raised in Denver, CO and lived there through high school. Then I moved to Champaign, IL where I attended the University of Illinois and played on the Fighting Illini baseball team. I was married in December, 2001 to Molly, who I met at the U of I. In June of 2002, we moved to Phoenix and have been here ever since.
